DarkVision: Accessible Media Inc.

Darkvision is a fun and exciting “Dungeons and Dragons” adventure featuring partially sighted players. The Dungeon Master portrays a wild cast of characters as the party tries to solve the Mystery of the Stone Statues and save their new friend.

Working with Accessible Media Inc. (AMI), we at Flow Video wanted to create a show that primarily was delivered auditorily rather than visually (not very intuitive as a filmmaker). Dungeons & Dragons works on the concept of theatre of the mind; it’s heavily described and perfect for blind audiences. We created DarkVision to be a show that caters to blind audiences first with a format that’s inherently accessible. And fun.

This doc is meant to be an entry point for people who have never played D&D, there is a little bit of learning, a little adventure and a little philosophy on what makes D&D such a wonderful game.

Regular D&D players will be envious of our Dungeon Master: Matt Relf. Matt is an incredible performer, highly creative improviser and is extremely knowledgeable in the world of D&D. He is everything you want in a DM and he makes a heck of a cocktail.

A Dungeons and Dragons session usually lasts for 4-5 hours so cutting it down to 40 minutes for TV was the first hurdle. D&D is largely improvised so it was impossible to predict where the story would lead and what we could cut out before beginning. After a 14 hour shoot day, it all needed to come together in the edit. There was no lack of options.
