Stella Maris: COVE

The Centre for Ocean Venture and Entrepreneurship (COVE) is one of the leading Ocean Tech facilities in the world. The Stella Maris project is a collaboration of the tenants at COVE, assembling their tech on one platform and dropping it in the harbour. It’s the first of its kind and a flagship instrument for capturing real-time data from the ocean.

At Flow Video we are always happy to be shooting by the water. So pretty.

The Stella Maris is a unique project because it was a first for so many people involved. This platform has never been designed before, it required fiber-optic connection and power for 20 sensors that would be mounted to it. It was new to everyone. Every sensor has it’s own sensitivities so putting them all together, they needed to play nice. If a hydrophone can pick up a whale song hundreds of kilometers away then it will also pick up the subtle motor noise of a panning camera.

Tom Knox delivers incredible insight and British charm as the technical lead on the build as the eloquent Melanie Nadeau (CEO of COVE) lays out the grand vision for commercialization.

Telling the story of Stella Maris is one of many examples of why we are so happy to be working in Canada’s Ocean Playground.
